Born in 1886 in Potts Point, Sydney, Annette had rickets and needed leg braces as a child. Meet Annette Kellerman, the early 20th-century pioneer who broke swimming records, dove off 90-foot cliffs, and became the first woman to appear nude in a major motion picture. When Annette Kellerman was born in 1886, women had to wear heavy wool garments to the beach or cover their legs completely with stockings.

Known as the Australian Mermaid, Annette had a long theatre career in Europe, the United States and Australia and was the first Australian woman to star in in. In 1952, Million Dollar Mermaid, a fictionalized screen biography of Kellerman, was filmed with Esther Williams in the title role, a logical choice since Williams was the only other female swimming champion to take to the screen and, in this way, not only followed up on what Kellerman had achieved, but may be considered to have been the Annette.
